Accessibility
melange aims to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.2 at level AA, in the library, the reader, its settings and the first run. It is partially conformant: what is checked passes, and the checks that need a person with a screen reader are not all done yet (below).
What the reader does
- The Spanish in a page is marked as Spanish (and shown English, as English), so a screen reader pronounces each in its own language. A translation’s name is its Spanish; what it is (a level, a stretch) is said in words, not only by its colour.
- Everything works from a keyboard: a skip link to the content, visible focus in every theme, pages turned by the arrow keys, translations walked by the arrows once one is open, and shortcuts that never need a modifier and stand aside in a field or a dialog. Press? on a chapter for the list.
- Dialogs and sheets keep focus inside while open and give it back where it was. A page turn is announced (“page 4 of 17”).
- Four themes and the system’s, all with body text at 7:1 contrast or more; Atkinson Hyperlegible among the typefaces, made for readers with low vision; text size, line height, measure and spacing are the reader’s to set. The page reflows at 320 pixels wide and at 400% zoom, and keeps its pages right under a text-spacing stylesheet of the reader’s own.
- Animations stop when the system asks for less motion, and page turns can be set to appear without one.
- On a touch screen, controls are at least 44 pixels high; a link inside a sentence follows its text.
How it is checked
Every change is tested before it is published: axe-core audits the library, a book, a chapter with a translation and the settings open, the first run and the component sheet in every theme against WCAG 2.2 A and AA, and the build fails on any violation. Keyboard use, focus, page turns, reflow at 320 pixels and text spacing have tests of their own.
Known limitations
- A full pass with VoiceOver, TalkBack and NVDA is still to come. Until it is done, some announcements may be missing or read in the wrong order.
- The translations are made by a language model. A wrong or clumsy one is a problem of its own worth reporting.
- The administration pages are not covered by this statement.
Report a problem
If something in melange is hard or impossible to use, please say so, with the page and what you use to read it. Tell the site’s owner through dominikkoller.com. Reports are answered, and fixed like any other bug.
